Joint UNESCO AEON Workshop

The Director General of UNESCO announced a new Earth Science Education Initiative at the regional launch of the International Year of Planet Earth in Arusha, Tanzania in May 2008. The intention of the initiative is to support the development of the next generation of earth scientists in Africa who are equipped with the necessary tools, networks and perspectives to apply sound science to solving and benefiting from the challenges and opportunities of sustainable development. AEON was chosen as one of four regional centres in Africa to plan this initiative.

The objective of the joint UNESCOAEON workshop is to assess regional capacities and needs in earth science education, research and industry highlighting centers of excellence through dialogue with relevant regional and international experts including representatives of universities, high schools, geological surveys, industry, and government. Recommendations from the workshop will form the basis of the initiative launch event in Paris in 2010. The event will be an opportunity to raise the visibility of the importance and relevance of Earth Sciences for Africa.

The first regional planning workshop will take place in AEON, University of Cape Town, on 26-27 November 2009.
